Why Choose Justus to Tell the Story?

I felt for him.

Here is a man who went "in and out" with Jesus and the disciples for the entire time of Jesus' ministry, which could have been not three, but four years. Then shall we say it was probably more than three years' close association with the palpable, touchable, living Person of Jesus Christ?

Can you imagine with me how Justus must have felt after the ridiculous notion that the Holy Spirit would give his advice and wisdom through what amounted to a crap game? If I were him, I would have felt that this is no way to determine the mind of the Holy Spirit! Throwing dice??? That is exactly what it amounted to. It was almost as if his time and closeness with the Saviour meant little or nothing.

Could he have felt rejected by God? Could he have felt that God had something against him? No doubt he was a sinful man. But then, so was Matthias! Did God pick the man who sinned the least or the most? Such considerations takes us on a journey into absurdity. He was clearly as qualified and credentialed as Matthias. Why didn't Peter lead the 120 people in prayer and search for consensus among them? Let's face it, Peter was just not the sharpest axe in the toolshed.

In fact, Justus precisely fits the kind of guy I think should tell the story of Jesus. He knew what it was like to be around coarse, vulgar, fishermen. He was amazed at how Jesus shaped and taught them and himself as well.

Justus was just the right fit. He was my kind of man.
