Think God is Sleepy?

"He who watches over me neither slumbers or sleeps."

Do you not find this comforting? Encouraging? God, our loving merciful God, is aware of every nuance of thought, every breath we take, every hair on our head. What is most amiable is that even when we sink into the mire of evil, even when we are aflame with lust and greed, even when envy and self-absorption commands every fiber of our being, he is there loving us through it.

God is not put off by my sin. He does not withdraw himself. He does not pull back and wait for me to come to him again. He remains involved. He is still engaged. The Holy Spirit is still vibrant within me. He will not turn away from us.

Not anymore.

Not since he considers me through the blood of his Son.

How do I do this with the failures of those I love? How do I refrain from withdrawing? How do I come to the place in my own heart where I say, “No matter the injury, no matter the profaneness, no matter the hurt and disrespect of me and my values, I will never let them think my love for them has faltered. How, Lord, do I do this?

When I find it in me to do this, I shall take a step closer to Jesus, a step closer to the one who neither slumbers or sleeps.

Lord, grant that I may find it in me to take that step today.
